What is Malocclusion?
A misalignment of the jaws and teeth is known as malocclusion. It’s a common condition that affects approximately 75% of Americans. The symptoms of malocclusion may not be severe in the short term. However, malocclusion over time may result in major problems that affect the entire body.

Types of Malocclusion
There are several different kinds of malocclusion. Here are some of the most common ones.
- Crowding – Too many teeth in too little space.
- Edge-to-Edge Bite – Upper and lower teeth close with no overlap.
- Overjet – Upper teeth close too far in front of lower teeth.
- Crossbite – Upper teeth close behind or inside lower teeth.
- Spacing – Extra space between teeth.
- Open Bite – Upper and lower teeth do not fully close, creating an opening.
Long-Term Risks of Malocclusion
If left untreated, malocclusion can put you at risk for several long-term oral health and whole-body issues. The following are some potential impacts of malocclusion over time:
- Tooth Damage – If teeth aren’t aligned correctly, they may chip, fracture, or wear down. In many cases, damaged teeth may need to be restored or removed.
- Sleep Apnea – Malocclusion may prevent proper nasal breathing while you sleep.
- Alzheimer’s Disease – Gum inflammation, which can be caused by malocclusion, may contribute to your risk of developing plaque buildup associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
- Gum & Bone Disease – Misaligned teeth can impart damaging forces to gum and bone tissues and act as a trap for food and plaque.
- Pregnancy & Hormonal Issues – Hormones released during pregnancy further increase the risks associated with malocclusion-related gum disease.
- Cardiovascular Diseases – Over time, malocclusion-related gum inflammation may contribute to plaque buildup in your bloodstream and increase your risk of a stroke or heart attack.
